Welcome to a comprehensive sports fan's travel guide to
Detroit sports events.

Welcome to Detroit

Located in southeastern Michigan, Detroit is the largest city
in the state, the 10th largest city in the United States and
the eighth largest metropolitan area.

Detroit has had a profound impact on the world – from being the automobile capital of the world to inventing the Motown sound – Detroit has crafted American culture.

Top-notch entertainment venues, fun family attractions, glitzy casinos and world class museums. These are just a
few reasons to plan a weekend getaway in Detroit! Ambitious redevelopment and renovations are sparking excitement in the 303-year old city.

Detroit, Michigan, is the home to six professional sports teams and is also one of several cities in the United States to have teams from the four major North American sports. Detroit is a premier destination for regional, national and international amateur sporting events.

Sports Teams & Events

There are currently thirteen metropolitan areas that have at least one team in each major sports league. Their principal cities are often said to have the "Grand Slam."
Detroit is one of those cities.

Up Coming Events

The Professional Bowlers Association has announced the Detroit area
will host the inaugural World Series of Bowling (WSOB), a revolutionary
festival of world-class bowling begins Aug. 2 and runs through Sept. 6.

Detroit, Michigan, is the home to six professional sports teams and
several university programs. Detroit is also one of several cities in the United States to have teams from the four major North American sports. Detroit is a premier destination for regional, national and international
amateur sporting events.

All but two of the area's teams competewithin thecity of Detroit.
There are three active major sports venues within the city: 41,070 seat Comerica Park ,home of the baseball team Detroit Tigers, 65,000-seat Ford Field, home of the football team Detroit Lions, and 19,983-seat
Joe Louis Arena, home of the ice hockey team Detroit Red Wings.
Detroit is known for its avid hockey fans. Interest in the sport has given the city the moniker of "Hockeytown."

The Detroit Tigers' 2008 season was the team's 108th season in Major
League Baseball's American League. After being picked by many to win
the AL Central Division[citation needed], the Tigers started the season a disappointing 0-7, being swept by the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox. Their first victory of the season came against the Boston Red Sox. Not until the Tigers' 80th game did the team reach a .500 record.

Expectations for the Tigers were high going into the 2008 season, with the franchise having traded for prominent talent in Edgar Rentería (from the Atlanta Braves) and Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis (from the Florida Marlins).

Despite the disappointing performance, the Tigers drew a franchise-record home attendance of 3,202,645 for the season. The team ranked third in the American League and eighth in Major League Baseball for home attendance in 2008.

On March 22, 2008 Cabrera reached an agreement with the Tigers on an eight-year, $153.3 million contract extension, the fourth-largest contract in baseball history, behind those signed by Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, and Manny Ramirez. The deal is also the largest in Tigers history, surpassing the five-year, $75 million contract signed by Magglio Ordóñez in 2005. Cabrera will earn $11.3 million in 2008, and then an average of $19 million per year through 2015.

The area's other major venue is the Palace of Auburn Hills, in suburban Auburn Hills. This 22,076-seat arena is home to the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Shock of men's and women's professional basketball, respectively.

On June 3, 2008, the Detroit Pistons announced that head coach Flip Saunders would not return as head coach for the 2008–09 regular season. On June 10, 2008 the Pistons named first year assistant coach and former players union representative Michael Curry as their new head coach for the 2008–09 season. On July 30, 2008, the Pistons signed guard Will Bynum and forward/center Kwame Brown.

Despite the trade for Allen Iverson, the Pistons regressed during the season, partly due to Curry's controversial moves anddisrupted team chemistry, including playing Iverson and Richard Hamilton as sixth men. As a result, the Pistons dropped further down the standings, only clinching a playoff berth on April 10, 2009. The season marked the first time since the 2000-01 season that the Pistons failed to reach 50 wins and had a losing season, finishing with a 39-43 record. The Pistons were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round in the 2009 NBA Playoffs. It was the first time the Pistons have been eliminated in the first round of the Playoffs since 2000.

On January 15, 2009, the Detroit Lions hired Jim Schwartz as head
coach. Schwartz spent 10 seasons with the Tennessee Titans, eight
of them as defensive coordinator, helping them compile a 13–3 record and first place in the AFC South in 2008.[7] The Lions also hired a new offensive coordinator (Scott Linehan), and a new defensive coordinator (Gunther Cunningham) soon after.

The Detroit Lions selected University of Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford for the #1 overall pick. The six-year contract reportedly contains $41.7 million in guaranteed money (the most guaranteed to any player in NFL history) and carries a total value of up to $78 million.

The 2008 Detroit Lions were the only team in NFL history to lose all 16 regular-season games, going 0-16 in the 2008 season; they had won all four pre-season games. They are only the second team to go winless without a tie, next to the 0-14 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers since the NFL-AFL merger in 1966.

The Detroit Red Wings are members of the Central Division of the
Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The club is one of the Original Six teams of the NHL. The Red Wings are one of the most popular sports franchises in North America, so much that Detroit is nicknamed "Hockeytown." The Red Wings have won the most Stanley Cup championships (10) of any NHL franchise based in the United States, and are third overall in total championships behind the Montreal Canadiens (24) and Toronto Maple Leafs (13). They currently play in Joe Louis Arena after having spent over 40 years in Olympia Stadium.

The Red Wings won their eleventh Stanley Cup on June 4, 2008 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Six of the Stanley Cup Finals by a score of 3-2. This was their fourth Stanley Cup in 11 years, between 1997-2008. Henrik Zetterberg scored the Stanley Cup winning goal and was also named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs.

In college sports, the University of Detroit Mercy has a NCAA Division I program, and Wayne State University has both NCAA Division I and II programs.

The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) is a comprehensive university in Detroit, Michigan, United States, created in 1990. With origins dating from 1877, it is the largest Roman Catholic university in Michigan. UDM is one of the twenty-eight member Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States.

The University of Detroit Titans compete in NCAA Division I's Horizon
League. The men's basketball team has consistently contended for
the Horizon League title. On April 12, 2008, UDM announced the hiring
of Ray McCallum as Men's Basketball Coach. McCallum is a veteran of
more than 20 years in college basketball, most recently as assistant head coach at Indiana University.

Since 1996-97, Detroit Titans athletic teams have won 14 league championships and 15 teams have competed in NCAA championships.
The men's golf team won the 2007 Horizon League championship. The University is the host institution for the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional and 2009 NCAA Final Four men's basketball tournament at Ford Field in Detroit.

The NCAA football Motor City Bowl is held at Ford Field each December. In addition, the sports teams of the University of Michigan are located in Ann Arbor, within an hour's drive of much
of the metropolitan area.

NASCAR races at Michigan International Speedway. MIS is a two
-mile , moderate banked, tri-oval superspeedway located off U.S. Highway 12 on more than 1,200 acres near Brooklyn, in the
scenic Irish Hills area of southeastern Michigan.

The Buick Open PGA golf tournament is held yearly at Warwick Hills
Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc,Michigan since 1958.

Since 1916, the city has been home to an American Power
Boat Association Unlimited
hydroplane boat race, held
annually (with exceptions) on the Detroit River near Belle Isle.
Often, the race is for the APBA Challenge Cup, more commonly known
as the Gold Cup (first awarded in 1904, created by Tiffany) which is the oldest active motorsport trophy in the world.

Windsor Red Bull Air Race June 13-14 2009
Last year the Red Bull Air Race was split between Detroit and Windsor but this year apparently the host is just Windsor, though of course you should be able to observe the air race from either side of the Detroit River.

This year's event will be held June 13-14 and hopefully with lower gas
prices it will be an even bigger success than last year, when nearly
750,000 people watched the air race.

The Detroit area has a long, successful history of hosting a variety of tournaments and events including USA, NCAA, AAU and USSSA events. Metro Detroit is also the chosen location for:

2005 MLB All Star Game
2006 Super Bowl
2007 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships
2008 AAU Junior Olympic Games
2009 NCAA Men’s Final Four
2010 NCAA Men's Frozen Four
